Elizabeth Alexander: Holy One, Source of Radiance and Reason

Holy One, source of radiance and reason,
Thou whose love endows and animates our lives.
We acknowledge Thy presence within, among and beyond us.

-Rev. Rob Eller-Isaacs

Gasparini: Adoramus te

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Palestrina: Jesu Rex Admirabilis

1  Jesus, wondrous king and noble conqueror, unutterable sweetness, wholly desirable:
2  Remain with us, Lord, and shine your light upon us, drive away the darkness of our minds, fill the world with sweetness.
3  You, Prince of all ages, You, Christ, King of people, You, of minds and hearts we accept as the one Judge.
4  The never-ending love of Jesus leaves me constantly weak, To me, sweet Jesus, You are the eternal fruit of my life.
5  In whatever place I find myself I will always desire Jesus. I am sick for love of Jesus And my heart is aflame.

Eleanor Daley: Upon Your Heart

Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm: for love is strong as death; Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. If you keep my commandment, you shall abide in my love, Love one another as I have loved you, Then shall your joy be complete.

Song of Solomon 8: 6,7 and John 15:9-12

Virgil Thompson: I. “Joseph and the Angel” from Scenes from the Holy Infancy

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife and knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS Matthew 1:18-24

Halsey Stevens: Nunc Dimittis

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, According to Thy Word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of Thy people Israel. Luke 2:29-32 Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Doxology

Lavinia Kell Parker: Soli Deo Gloria

Not unto us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory. Glory to God alone.

arr. Squatrito: Bright Morning Star

Bright morning star arising. Day is a-breakin’ in my soul.

Oh where are our dear mothers?They are sowing seeds of gladness. Day is a-breakin’ in my soul

Oh where are our dear fathers? They have gone on before us. Day is a-breakin’ in my soul

Oh how can I be lonely? My friends are all around me. Their loving arms surround me. Day is a-breakin’ in my soul

arr. Hairston: Give Me Jesus

In the morning when I rise, give me Jesus. You may have all this world; give me Jesus.

Just about the break of day, give me Jesus. You may have all this world; give me Jesus.

And, when I come to die, give me Jesus. You may have all this world; give me Jesus.

Healey Willan: Hodie, Christus natus est

Today is Christ born;

today the Savior has appeared;

today the Angels sing,

the Archangels rejoice;

today the righteous rejoice, saying:

Glory to God in the highest.  Alleluia!

People need wild places.  Whether or not we think we do, we do.  We need to be able to taste grace and know again that we desire it.  We need to experience a landscape that is timeless, whose agenda moves at the pace of speciation and glaciers.  To be surrounded by a singing, mating, howling commotion of other species, all of which love their lives as much as we do ours, and none of which could possibly care less about us in our place.  It reminds us that our plans are small and somewhat absurd.        BARBARA KINGSOLVER, Small Wonder
